November is National Pet Diabetes Awareness Month. While this disease can have serious consequences, proper diabetes management can keep diabetic pets in good health.
Signs of diabetes in pets include increased thirst, increased urination, increased weight gain OR sudden weight loss, weakness or fatigue. Diabetes is usually diagnosed through blood and urine testing.
While there is no cure, pets with diabetes can be successfully managed through nutrition, exercise, and if necessary, regular insulin medication. With your veterinarian’s guidance, a diabetic pet can enjoy a happy, active life.
Risk factors for diabetes in cats include age (older cats), genetics, neutered males, chronic pancreatitis, hyperthyroidism, obesity and physical inactivity. Ask your veterinarian for more information.
